Bathroom Renovations FAQs

Most frequent questions and answers about bathroom renovations

At the fundamental level there are many factors at play here. The most important thing to examine is the material list. The bathroom is typically a small room but so many different materials are used in this space to make it mold resistant, water proof, electrically safe, easy to clean and of course aesthetically pleasing.

The next factor that is of great importance in this formula is the skill required to deliver all of these benefits. Trades people study and apprentice for years before they even get an entry level position in a company. Every day on the job confronts the trades person with new opportunities to fine tun their skill.

Bathroom renovations can take anywhere from 1 week to a month depending on the size of the bathroom and materials used.

When it comes to budget, there are two components to the determining the value.

The first component is Material. This factor tends to fluctuate dramatically based on taste, style, availability and the list goes on.

The second component to the budget is of course, labour. This factor can fluctuate as well, but when you hire a skilled carpenter with years of experience they tend to be more efficient and organized which in the end saves you money.

When you get a quote you only see one price, and that’s because a contractor has calculated their profit, cost, and risk of doing business into the final number. If their estimation skills are off or contingencies overlooked – they can suffer a huge loss

There are 3 steps to getting your project started.

  1. We have to bid on the project. This means that you get a few different quotes from a few different companies. When you have your quotes you need to look at a few different things. Some home owners just compare prices and go with the lowers. We strongly advise against this. Price is always going to be an important part of the formula but don’t forget about experience, communication, google review, and your gut.
  2. We have to apply for permits from the city or municipality. Often times this is a seamless process however depending on the type of renovation we may need to get engineer certifications to proceed.
  3. The next step is the contract. Both parties are taking a risk when it comes to taking on a project like a bathroom renovation. For the contractor, he or she is guaranteeing you a price based on the perimeters set out in the contract. For you, the home owner you are banking on the contractor delivering a quality, high standard finished product in a timely fashion without delay.

Several inspections are required during construction to ensure that all work is done according to the permit plans and the Ontario Building Code. For a list of required inspections, please refer to your local municipality.
